I appreciate that there are the HD version of the official (V.iz translated) manga scans that helps a lot with my iconing but when I had to inevitably reread over the manga again, it's kinda weird that V.iz decided to replace all the techniques with the direct JP -> EN literal translation instead of using the actual spell name (e.g: Gyoku's Vainel Ganezza is now Water God Sea Summon).

Last Album?

So I actually haven't listened to all the new music from some of my favorite artists this year because I've been busy but at the start of the year I listened to all of "Ctrl" by SZA. This album effortlessly slides into my top 10 favorite albums. I don't know why I didn't get into SZA before but in January I was like "I need more of her voice", I decided to listen to more of her stuff and now I'm a huge fan. CTRL is such a good album within which SZA allows herself to be vulnerable about her relationships, insecurities and other things that people would generally never admit. My favorite song from CTRL is "Broken Clocks" but every now and then a different one comes back to me that I have on repeat for weeks. Also she casually mentions that she's dated women on this album(which came out in 2017) and confirmed it in a follow-up interview but I never really see people mention her as a queer/lgbt+ artist which is strange to me.

Last Movie?

Last movie I watched was Dr Strange in the Multiverse of Madness(it's finally available in HD digitally for you to DisneyMinus it). NOW I'M NOT ONE OF THE MCU GIRLIES but I do like spiderman movies and the last one had a end credits trailer(marvel studios, normal movies don't have these!!) for this one so I decided I would watch it too. However, I know marvel movies insist on trying to be some sort of fucked up gestalt so I watched WandaVision and Dr Strange 1 beforehand. DSMOM was not that good imo. The feats of power weren't really that impressive, they BARELY explored the multiverse for a movie that was supposed to be about it(Unlike our beloved All of It All Around At the Same Time ) and I believe they nerfed Wanda so that she wouldn't win her fights before they started. Wanda's lines were very iconic though and I think those saved the movie.

Currently Reading?

I started Chainsaw Man(manga) by Tatsuki Fujimoto a while back but I've been lazy with the reading so I'm not very far(I've become weak;teenage me used to finish entire manga series in like 2 days). I'm like 2 chapters in and it's alright but idk if I'll like it. It's very highly rated and popular among weebs, which isn't really a great vote of confidence, so I'm hoping it's good.

I haven't read any actual novels in while but I think I'll get the next book in the "Chronicles of the Avatar Series" once it comes out in a few days so I can find out the tea on Yangchen.

Currently Watching?

Harley Quinn(animated series). I'm not a huge DC(or marvel) fan because I was a weeb as a teen but it's refreshing to see DC from a modern and relatable point of view. I love observational humor and series that don't take themselves too easily so I really like this one.

I'm also watching Odd Taxi(anime). I don't think it's very popular but it got good ratings and was recommended by a close friend. It's alright so far.

I'm like halfway through Our Flag Means Death(live-action show) but I got busy and forgot about it. It's not bad but pirates and that time period aren't always interesting to me.

As I'm writing this I'm receiving word that season 4 of What We Do in the Shadows has started so I guess that's how I'll be spending my night.

Something sweet... a peach tree... Jk I'm not a wild woman and I do get the blues. Anyway maybe something savory like ____ or chicken?

While on an Akira Himekawa Legend of Zelda manga binge, the A Link to the Past volume was an even more nostalgic journey to the 1990s than anticipated.

The story roughly follows the game. It captures the main themes and arc, and does some worldbuilding. The authors added an original character who is Link's companion for part of the story.

As an older Zelda fan, what really stood out were the following:

Callbacks to Ocarina of Time

Akira Himekawa's first Legend of Zelda manga was Ocarina of Time, released in 1999. Their take on A Link to the Past came out in 2005, where they made direct references to OoT Ganondorf finding the Triforce in a this-is-on-the-same-timeline kind of way. Some of the depictions of Ganon in the manga were his OoT end-game demon boar/ram/person hybrid, rather than his A Link to the Past piggy wizard form.

Note that the Hyrule Historia came out in 2011. That was when Nintendo first "canonized" the multiple timelines, so this direct timeline take in the manga was rather bold. Prior to the Hyrule Historia, the fandom was full of debate about game order, especially with the discrepancies in the Japanese and English translations of the game manuals. For many, the continuity in the Legend of Zelda series was not unlike the continuity found in the Final Fantasy games: different worlds and casts with shared echoes of each other (chocobos, etc.).

The artwork in the ALttP manual is iconic. In multiple panels throughout the manga, Akira Himekawa paid homage to these distinctive scenes by redrawing them in their own style and folding them into their story. It was fun to see, even when the art style was fundamentally different (example: the creation of the Triforce half page spread, done in medieval European tapestry style was deeply nostalgic, but might have seemed very out of place for folks unfamiliar with the image).

90% of the manga is the same as the prior A Link to the Past manga series

Back in 1992, Shotaro Ishinomori created a full color manga serial for Nintendo Power Magazine. As I read the Akira Himekawa version, I kept getting hit with memories from the much older manga. In fact, in an homage to the original, Akira Himekawa redrew whole scenes and backgrounds unique to Shotaro Ishinomori's style (example: Ganon's Castle as a spiky sphere that hung in the sky over a mountain range). It was so wildly familiar.

So, I pulled my copy of the Shotaro Ishinomori manga from my bookshelf and read through it, just to compare the two, and yes, Akira Himekawa essentially made a "HD" version of the older manga, story and all. Although they added a little more additional worldbuilding, most of the major story beats unique to Shotaro Ishinomori's take are repeated in the Akira Himekawa version.

The biggest difference they had was taking two of Shotaro Ishinomori's original characters (a fairy and a sort-of bandit named Roam, who reads a lot like a proto-Revali) and mushing them together into their own original character (who is also a bandit and has a similar backstory to Roam's).

The other major difference with Akira Himekawa's version is that Link’s characterization is more classically heroic and noble, which feels better throughout the entirety of story, because it aligns to most versions of him in the games. Shotaro Ishinomori's version of Link is a bit of a whiny, goofy, and reluctant kid (in an often charmingly comedic way, because he is so relatable, given the bizarre and intense situations he is thrown into), who grows up throughout the journey and trials, and by the end is a selfless and courageous hero.

It was really interesting seeing the similarities. It doesn't feel like plagiarism because both manga were licensed by Nintendo, and Akira Himekawa had several references to Shotaro Ishinomori's distinctive background art and vision, especially with regard to the Dark World. It felt more like a tribute to an extremely famous and prolific manga author and artist (who had passed away in 1998).

Today I offer you a Princess Mononoke Redraw! ⭐ Lalla Mononoke 🌙 Haven't had much time to draw between my exams and this 3rd wave. I've been busy at the hospital doing resident stuff, catching some babies etc. but I offer you a redrawn scene from Princess Mononoke with a special twist. Usually people redraw the San/Ashitaka and the "I'll kill you/You're beautiful" but i went with this instead UwU [So yeah...... this is a giant fennec fox..... but it ended up looking like Kurama/Kyuubi from Naruto hahahaha 😭✋ I TRIED EVERYONE. ] My favorite Ghibli movie will always be Howl's Moving Castle, but Princess Mononoke comes in close second (I also really enjoy Castle in the Sky!).
